On December 12, 2003, Heydar Aliyev, a prominent politician, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1993-2003), the national leader of our people, died. At a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan in July 1969, Heydar Aliyev was elected first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. In December 1982, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Heydar Aliyev was appointed first deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and was one of the leaders of the USSR. In October 1987, Heydar Aliyev resigned from his post in protest against the political line pursued by the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and personally by the General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. On January 20, 1990, in protest against the reprisals against Soviet troops in Baku, the protest demanded to punish the organizers and perpetrators of the crime against the Azerbaijani people. He left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in July 1991 in protest against the hypocritical policies of Mikhail Gorbachev regarding the acute conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Upon returning to Azerbaijan in July 1990, Heydar Aliyev was chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in 1991-1993. In May-June 1993, when the government crisis was seriously threatened by the civil war and the loss of independence, the people of Azerbaijan rose to demand the return of Heydar Aliyev to power. Heydar Aliyev was elected chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan on June 15, 1993, and on July 24, by the decision of the Milli Majlis, he began to exercise the powers of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On October 3, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Great Leader, who won the love of the people, was elected president for the second time on October 11, 1998.
