Heydar Alirza oglu Aliyev was born on May 10, 1923 in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan.
In 1967, he was appointed chairman of the State Security Committee at the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR, and was also appointed to the post of major general this year. Heydar Aliyev was elected first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan at a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan on July 14, 1969.
Heydar Aliyev is a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for 22 years and the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In 1974-1979, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was appointed a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1976, elected to the Politburo in December 1982, and was appointed first deputy chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers. During his tenure, Heydar Aliyev led the most important areas of economic, social and cultural life in the USSR.
In October 1987, Heydar Aliyev resigned from his post as an opposition politician, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and personally General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev.
On January 21, 1990, Heydar Aliyev demanded that the organizers and perpetrators of a crime committed against the Azerbaijani people be punished for the bloody tragedy committed by Soviet troops in Baku on January 19-20, 1990. He left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in July 1991 in protest against the hypocritical policy of the USSR regarding the acute conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Returning to Baku on July 20, 1990, Heydar Aliyev left for Nakhchivan two days later and became a people's deputy of the Azerbaijan SSR and a people's deputy of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. On September 3, 1991, Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan and was Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He held this position until 1993. Heydar Aliyev was elected chairman of the party at the founding conference held on November 21, 1992 in the city of Nakhchivan. From May to June 1993, the country faced the threat of civil war and loss of independence, the Azerbaijani people demanded that Heydar Aliyev come to power, and the country's leadership was forced to invite him to Baku. Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan on June 15, 1993 and began to exercise his powers as President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on June 24. On October 3, 1993, as a result of nationwide voting, Heydar Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on October 11, 1998, gaining 76.1% of the votes in the high-profile elections of the people. Heydar Aliyev, who agreed to nominate his candidacy for the presidential elections on October 15, 2003, withdrew his candidacy in favor of Ilham Aliyev in connection with health problems.
On December 12, 2003, the national leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, died in the Cleveland clinic in the United States and was buried on December 15 in the Alley of Honor. Heydar Aliyev was awarded the fivefold Order of Lenin, the Order of the USSR, the Red Star Prize and numerous medals, twice the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, as well as the highest awards of various countries, honorary titles of reputable universities.
